Worship in spirit and truth?
What did Jesus mean to worship God in spirit and in truth in John 4: 23-24? Worshipping in spirit is not referring to the Holy Spirit as some mistakenly teach. It is referring to our human spirit, in other words, it’s referring to worshipping God from the heart, a heart that has been renewed by the Holy Spirit, i.e. (born again) No Music, Song, Hymn, or Devotion is true worship without a willing, cheerful, thankful, heartfelt love towards God, in the Name of Christ.
Whereas worshipping God in truth is based on God’s will as revealed in the Scriptures alone. We must come to God on His terms, not our own desires, talents, or imaginations. An example of false worship was committed by the two sons of Aaron, who were both ordained priests. In Leviticus 10:1-3, Nadab and Abihu offered up “strange fire” before God, an act that had not been authorized nor commanded and they both were killed instantly. In some churches today, drama, dancing, flag waving and the like have been offered up as worship, yet like Nadab and Abihu who thought they were being creative in worship, found out too late that they were wrong. Let us worship God with a grateful and trembling heart as we approach the Lord God Omnipotent on His terms, while remembering that He is a consuming fire.
